Annapolis: Kunta Kinte Memorial

Here's a quick one from Annapolis, Maryland. The book (and TV miniseries) Roots tells the story of a Gambian born American slave who was called Toby Waller. You probably know him better as Kunta Kinte.

The memorial is the only one in America which commemorates the true name and arrival of a slave in America. He was sold in Maryland to a Virginia slave owner.

The statue depicts Kunte reading to three children of different races, his hand outstretched to the Chesapeake Bay, where many slaves landed on the shores of America.

It's an outdoor memorial, so there are no specific hours. It's a nice place to sit and watch the bay, so if you're in the area, stroll by and check it out.
